About MassArt

Is Massachusetts College of Art + Design a public college?
Yes, MassArt is a Massachusetts state college and receives support from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. There are differentiated tuition charges for in-state and out-of-state students. In addition, MassArt charges a special New England rate for students from other New England states in any major program. (This replaces the college's previous participation in the New England Regional Student Program of the New England Board of Higher Education.) [See the Business Office section of this web site for information on tuition and fee charges.]

Is MassArt accredited?
Yes, Massachusetts College of Art + Design holds accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and from the National Association of School of Art and Design.

How many students attend MassArt?
Over 1300 students are enrolled in the BFA program, 100 in graduate programs, 90 in certificate programs, and over 1,000 students take PCE courses each semester.

Is admission to MassArt competitive?
Yes, each year the number of applicants to the college far exceeds the space available for new, transfer, or graduate students. Less than 45% of undergraduate applicants and less than 20% of graduate applicants are offered admission each year. MassArt's admissions people and faculty make very difficult decisions each spring. The Admissions section of this web site details admission requirements and procedures.

What is the best way to find out about Massachusetts College of Art + Design?
MassArt invites every parent, student, or other interested party who can travel to Boston to come for a tour of our amazing campus and to speak with an admissions professional. Tours can be scheduled on week days by calling 617.879.7235 or by emailing tour@massart.edu. If you are not able to visit in person, please take advantage of the information on this web site and contact Admissions by phone, email or letter with your questions.

Are there liberal arts requirements for MassArt undergraduate students?
Yes, fully one-third of the course requirements for the BFA degree program are in the Critical Studies Department. BFA students have specific course and distribution requirements in art history, social sciences, writing and literature, and science and mathematics. There are very exciting courses and faculty teaching in Critical Studies. You can find out more about the requirements, faculty, and descriptions of the courses in the Critical Studies section of this web site.

What if my son or daughter wants to take courses in a field not offered at MassArt?
Through several consortium arrangements, MassArt students can cross-register for courses at twenty-two other local and state colleges. And all this is offered without any additional tuition expenses! If your son or daughter wants to study a language, music, theater, women's studies, economics, advanced computer programming, or any of a multitude of offerings, he or she can do so through cross-registration. See the section on Consortia/Cross Registration on this web site for more information.

Does MassArt offer any international programs?
Yes, the college has several opportunities for students who wish to study in another country. Some courses offered through the regular degree program schedule include class work on MassArt's campus and spring vacation travel/study in Italy, Egypt, England, China, or elsewhere. Additional travel and study opportunities are offered during vacations and summers through the Program of Continuing Education. [See the PCE information on this web site for specifics.] There are semester exchange programs arranged by the Advising Office in England, Scotland, Spain, and The Netherlands. Additionally, students may, with approval of their major department and the Advising Office, plan a semester of study in another country; such programs can be taken under the auspices of another U.S. college or the student may make individual arrangements. Students who want to spend a semester studying at an art college in Canada (or at another U.S. art college) may do so as a AICAD (Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design) mobility student. [See the section on Consortia/Cross Registration for more information.]

Does MassArt have housing for its students?
MassArt has one residence hall, Smith Hall; rents another residence from Simmons College; and is in the process of building an apartment-style residence. Residence Hall space is not guaranteed; however, new students who apply for admission and for housing early in the spring usually are granted on-campus housing. See the Housing and Residence Life section of this web site for information on our residences and suggestions for locating off-campus housing.

Does MassArt help its graduates find jobs?
The MassArt Career Services Office offers a multitude of services to assist students and alumni with their job searches, including full and part-time job listings, an extensive resource library, career counseling, and several workshops on topics such as networking, writing artist statements, interviews, and resumes. See the Career Services section of this web site for information and schedules. The Colleges of the Fenway hosts a large career fair each spring with over 100 employers present to interview COF students and alumni. Many MassArt juniors and seniors include in their semester schedule an internship, part-time off-campus employment in art, design, or education. These internships are approved and supervised by faculty and Career Services and offer students opportunities to test their skills and interests in the marketplace. Additionally, all MassArt faculty are practicing professionals, active in design, fine arts, media, education, and/or academic areas. Faculty members often refer students to colleagues, firms, or other employment opportunities.
