Computer Lab UpdateThe computer lab is located on the twelfth floor of the Tower Building. The lab offers facilities for students to do Internet research, compose and revise papers, and complete and print assignments. The library as well as most of the campus has wireless connectivity, which gives you the opportunity to bring your laptops and access the Internet with a high-speed connection. We encourage students to test and evaluate wireless services using their own equipment. About the LabTake advantage of some of the benefits the lab has to offer including: computers and printing services (available to all computer lab users at no charge), Internet research, and FirstClass/MassArt e-mail client for checking your mail as well as web browsers for Web based e-mail. Finally, come and enjoy the Library's academic atmosphere as well as the picturesque view of Boston's skyline from the 12th floor. Equipment in the labThe computer lab has twenty-eight new, networked, iMacG3 PowerPCs OS workstations. Each has 256 MB RAM, 600 MHz processors, running Mac OS X (Jaguar 10.2.6). There are six DELL OptiPlex PCs (Pentium IV 1.70Ghz) with Windows 2000 operating system. There are two B&W Laser Printers and three-color scanning servers. New Operating SystemAll of the Macs in the lab have been updated from Mac OS 9 Classic to Mac OS X (Jaguar) which is more powerful, faster, and easier to use. For years, Mac files have been compatible with PC files. Now existing Mac OS |
X features and new capabilities combine to make software, file sharing, Internet communication, network services, and device connectivity more compatible than ever. The Mac OS X Print Center application automatically finds available printers--you simply need to select the one you want. Color ScanningThe library currently has three G3 Mac scanning servers running in Classic mode connected to UMAX Astra flatbed scanners for scanning full color images. Scan non-circulating Library materials or your own work and save the digital images on zips, floppy disks, or email the files. CD BurningThe lab has a 700 Mhz Macintosh eMac G4 with 512MB RAM. The eMac features Toast 5 Titanium CD Burning Software for making backups, cross-platform CDs, and copies of CDs. “How to” handouts on CD mastering are available in the computer lab. Getting HelpStaff is always available for technical support. Please contact the lab technician, Leslie Everett, or another available library staff member, and we will endeavor to resolve your problem as quickly as possible. During the semester the lab offers a variety of free hands-on computer workshops. They last approximately 60 minutes and are held on a first-come, first-served basis. Topics include: Intro to Mac OS X (Jaguar), Intro to FirstClass e-mail, and Microsoft Word tips. Ask Leslie Everett [leverett@massart.edu or 879-7106) for more information on the workshops. — Leslie Everett Circulation and Computer Lab Manager |
