Security on campus is of vital concern to Massachusetts College of Art. The Public Safety Department, located in the East Building, is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is dedicated to the safety of the MassArt community.

The Department's police officers are academy trained, and licensed as Special State Police Officers. They patrol the campus on a regular basis, and provide a wide range of security services. They are trained in CPR and first aid, and are always available to provide assistance.

The Department maintains a cooperative working relationship with State and local police agencies and area hospitals. If necessary, Public Safety will serve as a referral agency when the assistance needed is not available on campus.

The Public Safety Department is managed by the Police Chief who reports to the Vice President of Student Development. The staff consists of Campus Police Officers, and Institutional Security Officers (ISO's).

Campus Police Officers
The Chief, Deputy Chief, Sergeant and all other Campus Police Officers have the same authority on campus as municipal officers. They are trained to the standards of the Municipal Police Training Council, and are empowered to detain, question, and arrest violators of Massachusetts’ statutes. They may also report infractions of college rules to the administration for possible disciplinary hearings. MassArt Police Officers receive training in areas such as community policing, criminal investigation, self-defense and other related fields.

Institutional Security Officers
Institutional Security Officers are non-sworn, uniformed security personnel assigned to areas of the campus that are important to campus safety. To augment Campus Police Officers, ISO's patrol campus property and perform a variety of public safety services.

Safety Shuttle and Walking Escort Service
The Department operates the Campus Safety Shuttle seven days a week, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The Shuttle provides a drop-off service within about a two-mile radius of the campus. Walking escorts are also available to areas around the campus, nearby MBTA bus and trolley stops, and the MassArt parking lot. The Public Safety Department offers Crime Prevention programs, CPR training, and various safety programs and orientations throughout the year.

Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act
Published in accordance with the Federal Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 (Clery Act), the Public Safety Department Annual Security Report includes information concerning campus security, and provides advice regarding crime prevention strategies. It also details the law enforcement authority of campus police, and includes pertinent policies regarding the reporting of crimes, crime statistics for the most recent three-year period, and campus disciplinary procedures. For copies of the Annual Security Report, contact the Massachusetts College of Art Public Safety Department at the college address or call 617.879.7810. The report is also available on the MassArt website.

The Department strives for a high visibility approach from its officers, and is a firm believer in the concept of Community Policing. We are "user friendly" and depend on the interaction between our officers and the MassArt community to ensure a safe working and learning environment.
