Myths & Important Facts about Working with Artists & Designers
1. Myth: I don’t have a budget, but I have a great
project that a student can use for their portfolio.
Fact: We appreciate your interest in the talent of our artists
and designers. The Career Services Office lists paid opportunities. Our job
listings are open to both our matriculated students and alumni. Many are building
their business and client base with freelance jobs listed with our office.
Please know that we cannot accept freelance jobs in exchange for services or
for deferred compensation (i.e., the artist will only get paid if your idea/book/project
etc.sells). All jobs listed with us must offer financial compensation.
If you would like to discuss your project (including a ballpark budget), please
contact Maryellen Schroeder, Director of Career Services, mschroeder@massart.edu (617-879-7776).
2. Myth: I can offer an unpaid internship to a MassArt student
and get free creative talent for my business.
Fact: We consider our internships as apprenticeship opportunities
for our students. The Career Services Office maintains credit-bearing internship
listings for students in all academic departments. Internships are pre-professional
experiences for our students. Internship supervisors at the company must be
working professionals in the field so they can offer career advice and comments
about the student’s developing portfolio.
Although we have listed unpaid internships, employers widen their pool of
potential applicants by offering compensation. Internships help you hire a
talented artist or designer, get short-term assignments completed and preview
the abilities of potential future employees.
3. Myth: MassArt needs "real life" projects students
can work on in the classroom. My business can benefit from free student talent
and ideas!
MassArt is interested in partnerships and projects with the business community,
but the academic curriculum is quite full.
Compensation needs to be addressed in project proposals (scholarship donations,
cash, gifts to the department etc.). Your budget should also indicate any projected
material costs. We are sure you appreciate that all requests may not be accommodated.
