Event Planning
The office works with students, faculty, staff, and the Colleges of the Fenway to sponsor a wide array of activities. Highlights from previous years included Coffeehouses with live music, trips to Puerto Rico, Montreal, New York City, theme parties, and the annual trip to Haystack (environmental artist’s studio) and other art related trips for recreation and inspiration, poetry slams and more!
Student Activities provides the infrastructure for event planning by assisting individuals and groups in gaining approval for college related activities. The Office maintains information on a variety of service providers useful to anyone who may be planning events on campus. For example, sample contracts for entertainers, recommended printers, caterers, and musicians. The event planning procedure is designed to provide students with skills and experience that they will be able to translate into other planning situations. A step-by-step sequence is provided in developing an event.
Event Registration Process
Any activity not listed with the Registrar's Office that requires the use of college facilities MUST have a completed Event Registration Form on file in the Student Development Office at least FIVE days prior to the event. Blank forms can be obtained online below or in the Student Center, outside the Student Government Association Office and the Student Development Office, all located on the 2nd Floor, Kennedy.
Please familiarize yourself with the college's Alcohol and Substance Abuse policies.
The office coordinates and co-sponsors with other college members alcohol awareness and drug avoidance education on campus to help students make healthy choices. A library of appropriate materials is available in the Health and Counseling Offices and in the Student Center for student reference. The Director attends conferences and workshops as well as researches and conducts surveys to gather information for future programs. Student Activities and Programs facilitate the prevention of substance-related problems by:
- Training and working with professional staff and student leaders to facilitate prevention programs, awareness activities, and proactive campaigns about substance use and other wellness issues.
- Supporting and encouraging student organizations to incorporate alcohol and other drug education into their programming and events.
- Offering an alternative to alcohol and other drug use through consistently supporting campus and community social events that are alcohol-free or that encourage responsible alcohol use.
- Working with Dean of Students to educating students via judicial sanctions about low to no-risk drinking choices, alcohol abuse, addiction and the impact substance use has on the surrounding community.
- Identifying environmental forces in the community which place students at high risk for alcohol and other drug problems, and working with local consortiums and organizations to minimize risks.
- Changing the campus culture surrounding substance use by correcting students' misperceptions regarding quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption in their communities.
- Collecting and using alcohol and other drug-related research from local and national reports and surveys to educate the community.
- Member to the Massachusetts Restaurant Association (MRA) to train students age 21 and older the proper way to serve alcohol at registered events on campus. Alcohol Server Trainings occur twice a semester and are advertised college-wide. Please check the Student Activities and Programs calendar for up to date trainings.
