Grades 4-6

Draw of the Wild

Look at, study, and draw things in nature such as animals and landscapes. Students develop an understanding of drawing processes by working in a variety of media for self–expression. Several methods of drawing from observation are explored.

Fantasy, Myth and Magic

Create artwork that explores the history and powers of people and places, both real and imagined, through the creation of creatures and heroes in realms of the mind.

Land, Sea and Air

Look for ways that art can imitate nature. Through rhythms, patterns, repetition and color, students explore their imaginations and respond to their intuitive understanding of these elements. In this studio, students draw, paint, and sculpt.

Grades 7-8

Comic Book Art

This studio class focuses on the art of sequential comics. Learn how to translate sketches into clear, dynamic and entertaining comics. Focus on story structure, style, and find your own voice in the ever-changing world of comic art.

Color, Color, Color: Clash, Match and Saturate

Develop an understanding of how colors can express a certain mood, feeling, or idea. Students explore color using a variety of media and work from both observation and imagination.

 
Grades 7-10

Architecture and Design

How do we express our ideas about the architecture that surrounds us? What would your dream house look like? This studio includes drawing exercises, structural building projects, exploratory field trips, and the basics of drafting and model building.

Experimental Photography

Explore various alternative photographic processes. Learn the basics of black and white photography while exploring techniques to manipulate images in and out of the dark room. Students may bring a 35mm camera, but it is not required.

Comic Book Art

Learn how a piece is created from concept to drawing to construction. Learn to translate creative designs into finished work.

Studio Explorations

Draw, paint and sculpt from the clothed figure, the still life, and from imagination. Visits to neighboring museums and galleries emphasize the connections between students’ artwork and exhibited art. Studio work includes 2D and 3D fundamentals in mixed media. Composition and design elements are discussed and developed.

Computer Animation

Create 2D animations using programs such as Flash, Photoshop, and Sound Edit 16. View student and professional animations and improve storytelling techniques in the process.

Grades 9-10

Studio Explorations

Black and White Photography

Learn basic camera operations, black & white film development and printing, as well as rules and techniques of good image composition. Learn or strengthen skills in printing techniques and tools commonly used to create fine prints. A 35mm camera is needed; manuals are better, but point and shoot cameras are fine.

Grades 11-12

The Figure in Two Dimensions

Explore traditional and innovative ways to render the human figure in two dimensions. A variety of mediums and styles are presented. Nude models are used, so parental consent is required.

The Figure in Three Dimensions

Explore traditional and innovative ways to render the human figure through 3D sculpture. A variety of sculptural mediums and styles are presented. Nude models are used, so parental consent is required.
