NC137-C1 The Big Digital PrintDESCRIPTION Learn how to create stunning mural-size digital prints. Using your own images we will learn how to create high-resolution scans, adjust our images in Photoshop, and output them digitally using Epson wide-format archival inkjet printers. Students should bring negatives and blank CD-Rs (or other portable storage media) to the first class. The lab fee includes ink and paper for up to 40" of wide format output, as well as necessary test prints. INSTRUCTOR Robert Knight is an adjunct instructor of photography at Emerson College and MassArt. He received his MFA in Photography from MassArt and his BA from Yale University. NC145-C1 Web ComicsSPECIAL SCHEDULE Thu, June 12, 19 and Tue, July 1, 6-10pm (no class June 26) DESCRIPTION Explore new possibilities for creating your comics, manga, or graphic novels in Flash for the web! Learn how to tell a story through your drawings, and how to use animation cycles, sound effects and navigation to give your stories more punch and pizzazz, not to mention broader visibility. This class will combine lectures with hands-on work in Flash. A working knowledge of Flash basics is required. INSTRUCTOR Lenni Armstrong is President and Founder of informmotion, a multimedia studio specializing in conveying complex information through animation, and interactivity. Lenni has over twenty years of experience as a professional multimedia designer, illustrator and animator, and has been teaching Flash for five years in both corporate and academic settings. She holds a BS from Simmons College and has a laboratory research background in the biomedical sciences. NC146-C1 Making the Cut: Editorial Decision MakingDESCRIPTION This workshop will follow the development of a documentary film currently in final cut stages that will be internationally released and is scheduled for public television release this fall. Highlighting several sequences, the class will look at these sequences in various stages of completion and discuss the decisions that affected its progression. This includes decisions on interview bite choices, archival and b-roll choices, as well as music and motion/title graphic choices. The class will also offer the opportunity for students to bring their own media, or shoot some basic interview material to work on specific editing issues using Final Cut Pro. Basic Working knowledge of Final Cut Pro is necessary. INSTRUCTOR Tim Raycroft is a video editor for Northern Light Productions, Boston, MA. NC175-C1 Basic Tapestry WorkshopDESCRIPTION This class is an introduction to basic tapestry weaving techniques. Students construct portable frame looms and weave tapestry samplers experimenting with techniques such as slits, stripes, interlock, dovertail, color and composition. Advanced students expand technical skills exploring complex geometric and pictorial designs, using tonal shading. Beginners welcome! NC253-C1 Experimental Monoprint WorkshopDESCRIPTION Rich and expressive, monotype joins the graphic qualities of printmaking with the spontaneity of painting. In this workshop students will learn the basics of chine colle, pronto plate, collagraph and viscosity printing as well as other processes. This hands-on workshop explores the sequential possibilities of monotype to develop your images conceptually and formally. Image-making methods, ink handling, print tools, paper handling, single-and multi-pass printing procedures, hand coloring and the development of "ghost" imagery through successive printing states will be developed. NC413-C1 Landscape Painting in MaineDESCRIPTION This two-day workshop emphasizes the practice of landscape painting within a continuum from realism to abstraction. After an introductory group meeting, students paint on their own in watercolor or oil at any of the many beautiful sites in the Cape Neddick-York area of Southern Maine. A lively group critique at the end of each day thoroughly examines every painting. Participants should bring a folding chair and/or easel along with art supplies. Obtain directions and information about reasonable off-season rates from Continuing Education. Contact the instructor for clarification and advice. Students wishing to obtain credit may use the hours of this workshop toward an independent study arranged with the instructor. Class begins at 10:30am on Saturday. NC422-C1 The Beginning Digital PhotographerDESCRIPTION This class will allow you to take control over your photographs by teaching the basics of the digital camera. We will explore effective techniques for taking better pictures with the most automated of digital cameras to the latest digital SLRs. In addition we will look at options for editing images ranging from Adobe Photoshop to I-Photo. You will gain an understanding of resolution, basic retouching techniques, a familiarity with file handling, and a greater appreciation for the aesthetics of your photography. NC424-C1 Palladian Printing WorkshopDESCRIPTION Learn to make beautiful palladium prints with an extraordinarily long tonal range in this 2-day workshop. Palladium printing produces beautiful dark brown prints with a velvety surface texture due to the way that the metals are absorbed by the paper support. This process, along with platinum, produces the most stable metal-based prints available. The first day we will make enlarged negatives from imagery from multiple sources. We can start with 35mm – large format negatives, prints or anything you can think of. We will make both digital negatives and enlarged negatives on film in the darkroom, learning what the best negatives for palladium printing should be and how to make them. We will print on the second day. We will hand-coat our paper, adjusting for contrast and density and learn how to get the best prints by focusing on fine-tuning the process. This class is for photographers at any level, however some darkroom experience is preferred. NC425-C1 New Directions for Landscape PhotographySPECIAL SCHEDULE Th, 6:30-8:30p, Jun12, 19 & Sat & Su, Jun 14 & 15 on location at Deer Island and Harbor Islands DESCRIPTION This workshop will explore landscape photography as a vehicle for considering the environment. Climate change, energy consumption, and a global population explosion are just a few of the major challenges bearing pressure upon the planet. With environmental concerns increasingly dominating scientific, political and cultural discussion, there has never been a more apt time for artists to interpret such issues in innovative ways. The course will include a brief classroom session along with shoots on the Harbor Islands over one weekend with a follow-up session for review and critique. Students may shoot in the format of their choice but must have prints available for the review session. INSTRUCTOR Eirik Johnson is an acclaimed photographer whose work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the George Eastman House in Rochester, and the Aperture Foundation in New York among other museums and galleries. His work is in permanent collections which include the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the National Fulbright Foundation and the Joseph and Elaine Monsen Collection. He has received several awards including the Santa Fe Prize in 2005 and a Fulbright Grant to Peru in 1999-2000. His first monograph, BORDERLANDS, was published by Twin Palm Publishers in 2005 and featured in Dwell Magazine in May, 2007. NC838-C1 Illuminations: A Handmade Paper and Light Structures WorkshopSPECIAL SCHEDULE May 30-Jun 1, F, 6-9p, Sa/Su, 9-6p DESCRIPTION In this workshop, we use bark fibers from Japan, China, and Southeast Asia to explore techniques of hand papermaking and to produce thin yet strong papers suitable for creating illuminated structures. After soaking and cooking the fiber, we hand beat the fiber and begin to pull sheets. In the second session, we will fabricate lampshade structures and other illuminated objects with our handmade papers, making the most of their translucent qualities. INSTRUCTOR Deborah Klotz is a sculptor who holds a BA from Brandeis University and a BFA and MFA from MassArt. NC862-C1 Backstrap WeavingDESCRIPTION This two-day workshop is an introduction to indigenous pattern weaving from ancient american cultures. Stuents work on traditional style backstrap looms, creating colorful geometric designs and stylized plant, animal and human figure motifs. On Saturday, artisans from A Thread of Hope, Guatemalan Fair Trade Co-Op, will demonstrate traditional back strap weaving techniques and display handwoven accessories, clothing, and textiles for sale.
