PM100-C1 Introduction to PrintmakingDESCRIPTION In this class students develop their sense and confidence for handling a variety of print media. Sessions will focus on various printmaking techniques in the fabulous MassArt Print facility. Topics include basic intaglio, relief work, collographs, relief, drypoint, stamped and monoprint techniques. The sessions will include demonstrations, critiques, and individual work time. Students will complete several prints, including a portfolio of prints, as a final project. There will be outside assignments each week to encourage the development of the student’s personal imagery. INSTRUCTOR Alexander DeMaria holds a BA in studio art and philosophy from Vassar College and is an MFA candidate at MassArt concentrating in printmaking and painting. PM280-C1 Silkscreen PrintingDESCRIPTION This course presents a variety of techniques and applications of silkscreen printing. We will explore references to the contemporary fine arts application of the medium to inspire a creative approach to this versatile process. From handcut paper and film stencils to the development of photographic stencils, this class guides the student through the transformation of an idea to printed image. Emphasizing experimentation, design, drawing and multi-color printing, projects are intended to provide students with a multi-faceted approach to the development of their personal aesthetic. PM206X-C1 Digital Silkscreen: Welcome to the 21st CenturyDESCRIPTION This course explores basic silkscreen techniques such as creating digital files for printing purposes, photographic stencil making, screen preparation, editioning and printing processes. Basic instruction in Photoshop will also be covered. This course approaches silkscreen printing as a mode of expression and concentrates on the integration of digital media with silkscreen. The goal of the class will be to find a balance between the digital and the handcrafted, to develop skills that extend image-making possibilities beyond the computer. INSTRUCTOR Danielle LaPlante, printmaker, received a BFA from MassArt and MFA from Columbia University. She is experienced in Intaglio, silkscreen (traditional and digital), relief, papermaking and bookmaking as well as painting, drawing digital media and design. PM260-C1 Beginning EtchingDESCRIPTION This course addresses all aspects of the intaglio processes including dry point, hard and soft ground etching, aquatint, and the carborundum print. The first half of the semester will focus on helping students become familiar and comfortable with all of these techniques. Students will be encouraged to keep a drawing journal during the course, as drawing is the root of the print process, and will be challenged with a series of technical and visual explorations. The class will include critique and discussion to help students learn about their work, the work of others, and encourage their individual artistic vision. Drawing skills helpful. INSTRUCTOR Catherine Stack holds a BFA in printmaking from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and is a MFA candidate at MassArt concentrating in printmaking and drawing. She was a resident artist at the John C. Cudahy YMCA in Milwaukee. NC253-C1 Experimental Monoprint WorkshopDESCRIPTION Rich and expressive, monotype joins the graphic qualities of printmaking with the spontaneity of painting. In this workshop students will learn the basics of chine colle, pronto plate, collagraph and viscosity printing as well as other processes. This hands-on workshop explores the sequential possibilities of monotype to develop your images conceptually and formally. Image-making methods, ink handling, print tools, paper handling, single-and multi-pass printing procedures, hand coloring and the development of "ghost" imagery through successive printing states will be developed. Individual and group critiques as needed. All levels welcome. FIB203X-C1 WET: Surface & Form in Handmade PaperDESCRIPTION In this weeklong course, students will learn traditional techniques and contemporary methods of working with handmade paper. The course addresses topics of particular interest to printmakers: producing custom stock for an edition, shaped deckles, watermarking , stenciled "blowouts", casting with printed papers, as well as developing a personal and structural vocabulary of paper choices for printing (controlling size, shape, thickness, absorbency, and texture of papers used for a variety of printing techniques). We will work with both Western and Eastern fibers including cotton, abaca, flax, gampi, kozo, and sabai. We will also produce recycled pulp from a variety of sources including print fragments. Topics include pulp preparation, 2-d sheet forming and controlled drying, 3-d construction methods of vacuum forming, casting, and spraying, surface imaging through painting with overbeaten pulps, laminations, embossings and watermarking. This class is open to students from all backgrounds and levels, this course is also suited for those experienced students wishing a more in depth studio work to pursue independent paper projects with technical and conceptual support INSTRUCTOR Deborah Klotz is a sculptor who holds a BA from Brandeis University and a BFA and MFA from MassArt. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in fibers and sculpture at MassArt, Maine College of Art , and Southern Maine Community College in Portland. She has exhibited at the DeCordova Museum, the Fuller Museum, Maine Coast Artists and recently at the Kiznick Gallery, Brandeis University. PM211X-C1 Prints into BooksDESCRIPTION The combination of relief and monotype printmaking with the creation of artists’ books affords participants rich and varied possibilities for working with imagery in sequence. We will experiment with a variety of printmaking techniques and generate one and two-sided printed surfaces that will be combined in several ways within sewn and folded book formats. Basic bookbinding techniques along with collage, image transfer, carving and printing will be addressed. The pace will be fast and furious, with inspiration and creative mischief-a-plenty. INSTRUCTOR Annie Silverman is a relief printmaker and book artist who has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, in South Africa, Cuba, and Japan. She holds degrees from Clark University, MassArt and Tufts University. Her work is in the collections of the Boston Public Library and DeCordova Museum.
