IL2X9-C1 Black and White IllustrationDESCRIPTION This class introduces students to methods and materials used to create striking black and white illustrations including ink with brush, pen, and eye-dropper; stipple with technical pen, acrylic and gouache painting, pencil and white Prismacolor on toned Canson, blockprints, and scratchboard. Each week will include a tutorial of new media and techniques, followed by participatory critiques of homework assignments based on the technique taught the previous week. The class will explore examples of work by successful contemporary artists and there will be visiting guest lecturers who will show their work and offer tips and advice for successful careers in the illustration world. Basic drawing skills are required for this class. INSTRUCTOR Mark Reusch (Mister Reusch) is an illustrator and holds a BFA from MassArt. His work has appeared in the Boston Phoenix, Burton Snowboards, the Boston Globe, etc. His rock posters have been exhibited in Boston, New York and Philadelphia and have also been included in the book Art of Modern Rock. IL2X6-C1 Art of the Comic BookDESCRIPTION This course covers all of the classic tools of the trade and the basics of integrating text and images to tell stories in the classic comic book format. Starting with character development, students move on to scripting, page layout, penciling, inking and adding text/dialog. Concepts such as how to convey the passage of time and how to frame action for a particular mood or effect will be discussed. There will be discussions on the history of the comic book and its diverse forms, from the big industry superhero style books, to the small press underground or zine style books, to the development of comics in other countries. Personal expression within the medium will be the focus utilizing the unique flexibility of the comic book craft for all genres. Basic drawing/writing skills helpful. INSTRUCTOR John Burkett is a 2-D artist. He holds a BFA from the University of Washington, an MFA from MassArt and a Certificate from the Sorbonne, Paris. IL412-C1 Illustrating Children’s BooksDESCRIPTION Learn all there is to know about how to illustrate and publish a children’s book. We will survey the genres and mediums in the market today and then choose a story, work on character and scene development and ultimately complete a dummy book presentable for publication. Learn how to present your portfolio and yourself to the market. Drawing experience helpful. Open to all levels. INSTRUCTOR Ilse Plume is a collector and illustrator of children’s books from around the world. She has a BFA and MFA from Drake University in Des Moines, IA. Her first book, The Bremen-Town Musicians was a Caldecott Honor Book for 1981. Ilse has illustrated books by Jane Langton, Nancy Willard, and Charlotte Zolotow, adapted and retold folk tales and illustrated children’s songs and poems. Most recently, Ilse taught at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, The Radcliffe Seminars in Cambridge, MA, and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has also given workshops at the Split Rock Arts program in Minnesota, and Venice, Italy. Her latest book, written by Jane Langton, is Saint Francis and the Wolf, which was published October, 2007 by David R. Godine. She is currently at work on some other Italian tales. ANI2X8-C1 Animation DesignDESCRIPTION When working for animation studios, Illustrators and those who establish the look of a project are referred to as "Designers." It is their responsibility to help conceptualize, design and render the established style. This responsibility can include title treatments, backgrounds, characters, props, and any of the components that create that imagined world. Each choice must feel believable within the "laws of nature" defined to that project. This class will study the role of the "Designer" in Animation through in-class screenings, demonstrations and discussions. Projects will provide an opportunity to design a wide range of imagined environments and characters for animation projects. INSTRUCTOR Leland Burke is Associate Professor of Animation at MassArt and Area Coordinator for the animation concentration. He has been a visiting lecturer at Wheaton College, SUNY/Purchase College, Portfolio Center in Atlanta, and Atlanta College of Art. He is Principal of Leland Burke Studio where his clients have included Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Turner Productions, The New York Times and Random House. His print work has been recognized in the Graphis Design Annual and Communication Art’s Illustration Annual. His animated film "The Creek" won awards at the Black Maria Festival and New England Film and Video Festival. FD215X-C2 Fashion Illustration 1DESCRIPTION This course introduces the methods of illustration for the fashion designer. Basic anatomy and analysis of the idealized female and male fashion figure will be emphasized through demonstrations and in-class exercises. Students will illustrate color fashion plates with apparel details, fashion silhouettes, and textile rendering using magic marker, watercolor, acrylic, and gouache. Basic layout skills, critique and editing processes are critical foundation teachings. Flat sketch, technical drawing skills are taught. INSTRUCTOR Andy Chan holds a BFA from MassArt and Master of Education from UMass Boston. His designs have been exhibited at the Waldorf Astoria, NYC; Park Plaza, Boston, MA; Sheraton Commander, Cambridge, MA and the Copley Plaza, Boston. His awards include Lord & Taylor "Dress for America" Top 5 Finalist. His work has been published in Boston Magazine’s annual "Faces to Watch"; Stuff Magazine; Boston Phoenix and the Boston Sunday Globe. He also taught at Lasell College and Newbury College.
