Frequently Asked Questions

What is the class size?

Classes are capped at 12 students; the only exception is “From the Body: Exploring Your Visual Language” with Timothy Hawkesworth and Lala Zeitlyn which is capped at 16 as there are two instructors.

I am a painter but interested in trying ceramics which I have never worked in; are beginners okay?

Yes, Art New England Workshops welcome participants of all levels. Classes are kept small so instructors are able to work with students individually. If you need assistance in deciding which class makes the best sense for you please contact us.

I submitted my registration online, but I did not see my discounts calculated. When will my discount be applied?

All discounts will be applied to your final bill.

What are accommodations like?

Participants who choose to stay on campus (85% do) stay in Bennington College dorms which are wooden frame New England style houses. Rooms are simply furnished: a bed (linens are provided), desk, bureau and lamp. Before you arrive we send a packet of information which includes a list of things you may wish to have for your stay (extensions cords, clothes hangers, etc.). Most students choose single accommodations; bathrooms are shared by 3-4 participants. Each dorm floor has a kitchenette which includes a refrigerator where you may store items which require refrigeration.

What is the food like?

The food is good and plentiful. All meals are cafeteria style and all you can eat with a variety of options at each. Hot and cold breakfasts include waffles, eggs, and several hot and cold cereals. Lunches and dinners include a large salad bar, at least two sometimes three, hot entrees (usually with at least one option for vegetarians), cheese, cold meats and sandwich breads and deserts.

Where is Bennington located? Where do I fly into?

Bennington College is located in the southwest corner of Vermont, on the border of Massachusetts and New York State. The nearest airport is Albany, NY. There are several car services from both the Albany airport and train station that will take you directly to the Bennington campus. It is about a fifty minute trip.

I will be staying off campus and would like to purchase meals at the cafeteria, can I do that?

Yes, you can purchase meals at the cafeteria with cash (credit cards are not accepted). Lunch is included with your tuition.

Teacher with student

The class I am interested in is full. How does it work if I put my name on a waiting list?

If someone drops we will call the first person on the list and ask them to let us know (within 48 hours) if they want the class. If that person does not want it we will continue down the list. Putting your name on a waiting list does not obligate you to take the class if a space becomes available.

I am a k-12 teacher and need proof that I have taken this class. How is this provided?

A letter of attendance form will be in your folder which you receive upon arrival at campus. You complete this form including the name and address of who you want your letter sent to. In September a letter confirming your successful completion of the course is sent to the address you have provided.

I am in my mid-forties; will I be the oldest person there? What is the average age?

No, you will certainly not be the oldest person there. The average Art New England participant is between 35 and 50, with some people in their early 20’s (often between undergraduate and graduate school) and some people well into senior years.
