@ Bennington, VT
Art New England workshops are held on the campus of Bennington College, located on 550 acres of rolling hills in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The campus is approximately 30 minutes from Williamstown, MA (to the south) and Albany, NY (west). Attractions in this area include a wealth of cultural resources, including Mass MOCA, the Clark, Tanglewood, and the Marlboro Music Festival.
Arrival
Check-in time for each session is scheduled for Sunday afternoon between 2 and 5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. staff and students will gather for introduction and orientation. The first class meeting is 7 p.m. Sunday evening. Check-out time is Saturday after lunch.
Living on Campus
Most Art New England participants stay on campus and choose single living accommodations. Dorms are in colonial style houses and students share communal bathrooms. Double rooms also are available; if you come alone and choose a double we will place you with another participant who requests a double. Linens, blankets, pillows, and towels are provided.
A fully equipped gym and hiking trails are available for daily exercise. In addition, Art New England shares the campus other complementary art programs-- Chamber Music of the Northeast and a theatre program—both of which contribute to the sense of creative energy on campus. Participants will be able to take advantage of concerts and performances.
Living Off-Campus
Some participants choose to stay off campus. Off-campus students are provided with Sunday night dinner and lunch every day (included in the price of tuition) and may purchase breakfast and/or dinner from the cafeteria
Extended Stay
The extended stay option is for participants who want to take advantage of the Art New England environment for a week before or after their workshop without being enrolled. Students receive accommodations (room and meals) plus studio space, allowing them to continue work they’ve begun the previous week, or begin working a week before their workshop starts. It is also a great time to explore the many extraordinary museums located near Bennington, such as the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MassMOCA) in North Adams, MA and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA. The extended stay is on a space available basis and your space will be confirmed in June.
Studios
The Visual and Performing Arts Complex includes many spacious studios for painting and drawing, a fully-equipped printmaking studio, two ceramic studios with electric, gas, and Raku kilns, generous sculpture studios, and a well-equipped darkroom.
Evenings
The program offers evening lectures by faculty, and a life drawing studio open to all. Art New England shares the Bennington campus with a music program (Chamber Music of the Northeast) so the delightful sounds of their practice fill the air. On Wednesday evenings they usually present a concert, free and open to the public.
