Great teachers and great artists draw on the same skills: creativity,
passionate engagement, excellence of craft, the ability to think
reflectively and the capacity to assess themselves as their work
progresses. Like artists, the best teachers have an intellectual
and aesthetic vision. “Both teaching and art-making are
challenging. Tenacity and commitment are necessary for success,”
says Maureen Kelly, chair of the Art Education Department, “and
the rewards of engaging in both art-making and teaching are satisfying
beyond measure.”
