New students at MassArt
MassArt's new undergraduate students are amazing. The list of art and academic
awards that they have won would fill at least two library shelves. They are
singers, actors, musicians, dancers, and set designers; track stars, pole vaulters,
equestrians, hockey and tennis stars, snowboarders, competitive swimmers, bowlers,
and figure skaters. They build robots, skateboards with sails, remote-controlled
cars, and houses for Habitat for Humanity. They do volunteer work in their communities
and in Panama and Puerto Rico, for AIDS benefits, Mass. Coalition for the Homeless,
and Special Olympics. They are docents for the MFA, yearbook editors, Duck Stamp
winners, television producers, teaching assistants. They number 400, 25% of
them entered as sophomores, juniors, readmits, and special/visiting students.
40% are transfers. 20% are American students of color; 4% are international
students on non-immigrant visas. They come from 18 states and 5 countries. 27
students on immigrant and non-immigrant visas are citizens of 21 countries.
They previously attended 160 different high schools and over 120 colleges.
