Each year the Division of Institutional Advancement undertakes, with faculty,
program directors, and board volunteers, a range of initiatives and services
to achieve MassArt’s fundraising goals as outlined in the College’s
strategic plan.
In academic year 2006, the College and the MassArt Foundation generated over
$3.6 million from alumni/ae, friends, Trustees and Foundation Directors, government,
business, foundations, and special events to support annual programs and build
the endowment. Fundraising revenue is the result of a wide range of activities. Some
highlights:
Grants and Sponsorship
Revenue from foundation, government and corporate grants and sponsored projects
provided $470,000 for academic and community initiatives. For example,
MassArt was awarded a
two-year grant of $48,000 from the IFSA Foundation for study abroad scholarships
at the University of the Arts London; another two-year grant of $30,000 for
the youth gallery education program, Looking to Learn from The Lehman
Brothers Foundation; $28,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts for K-12
summer scholarships; and $50,000 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council to
develop a business education program for artists with Bentley College.
Annual Fund
The MassArt Fund (unrestricted annual gifts, auction,
annual restricted support) provides ongoing general operating support for a
variety of programs such as the Writing Center, adjunct faculty, merit prizes,
all-school awards, auction awards and scholarships, travel scholarships, faculty
professional development, and museum memberships. Last year, $972,000 was contributed
by our supporters and friends towards the goal of providing each student with
the best arts & design
education. Additionally, the MassArt Foundation distributed over $130,000
from restricted endowed funds.
Major Gifts
This past year, in the second year of the “quiet” phase of our
capital campaign, we raised over $2.2 million for endowment, including: $500,000
pledge from Liz and Robert Pozen; $250,000 from Hope and Mel Barkan establishing
the Barkan Student Travel Fellowships; $250,000 from Bruce Dayton for the Bruce
Dayton Faculty Fellowship; $100,000 from an anonymous alumna to create the
Marilyn Pappas Faculty Fellowship; and $50,000 from Kathryn (’93) and
John Hamill to fully endow the Thomas L. Butler Scholarship. A group
effort from family, friends and colleagues of Marge Hellerstein resulted in
a new$32,000 endowed fund for the Professor Marjorie Hellerstein Literary Reading
and Lecture Series. Based on our intentions to apply for a Kresge Foundation
Challenge Grant, and the fund raising opportunities that will arise with the
new Center for Design Innovation, the Foundation has extended the campaign
another two years. We anticipate that a major public announcement about
the campaign will be made in late Fall of 2007.
This past year, seven alumni and friends--ranging from the classes of 1939
to 2003 announced their intentions to include the College in their estate plans. Currently,
the Longwood Society has 31 members who have made a planned gift. We
encourage faculty and staff who have named MassArt in their will to identify
themselves, and become members of the Longwood Society.
Your Ideas
We welcome your ideas,
advice, and partnership as we seek to achieve the College’s fundraising goal of nearly $4 million in academic year 2007. Again
this year, the Foundation will award five $5,000 faculty fellowships. In
addition, the Foundation will launch a pilot Faculty Ventures Fund Loan Program.
