What degrees are offered at MassArt?
Massachusetts College of Art + Design offers one undergraduate degree, the Bachelor of Fine Arts, and two graduate degrees, the Master of Science in Art Education and the Master of Fine Arts. The college also offers a post-baccalaureate program in Teacher Preparation and certificate programs in Graphic Design and Industrial Design. What programs are available for adults or non-degree students?
MassArt offers an abundance of courses and workshops through the Program of Continuing Education each fall, spring, and summer semester and winter vacation. PCE courses can be taken on an individual basis or, with acceptance into a program, combined into a design certificate. Can non-degree students take courses in the degree program?
No. All space in the degree programs is taken by degree candidates. Students who are not in the degree programs can take courses for undergraduate or graduate credit in the Program of Continuing Education.
Does MassArt offer programs for younger students?
A great variety of Saturday, after school, vacation, and summer courses are offered for elementary, middle, and high school students. See some of the exciting opportunities on the K-12 pages on this site.
Are there liberal arts requirements for MassArt undergraduate students?
Yes, fully one-third of the course requirements for the BFA degree program are in the Critical Studies Department. BFA students have specific course and distribution requirements in art history, social sciences, writing and literature, and science and mathematics. There are very exciting courses and faculty teaching in Critical Studies. What services does MassArt provide to the community?
MassArt has a long tradition of service to the community. Currently, the Student Development Division offers students many opportunities for service learning and community service. (See the Community Service section of this web site). President Kay Sloan says "We want students to think about what kind of creative energy the artist can bring to help solve community issues while enhancing the quality of life for people."
Are the exhibitions open to the public?
Yes, anyone who is interested in any exhibition at the college may visit the college galleries, which are free and open to the public. Does MassArt have housing for its students?
The Massachusetts College of Art + Design houses students in two residence halls. Smith
hall accommodates 116 students who are entering college for the first time.
The Artists’ Residence (MassArt’s apartment-style residence hall) provides living
space for 250 continuing, transfer, graduate students and a small number of
first year students. MassArt guarantees residence space to all first time college
students whose residence applications and deposits are received by the Office
of Housing and Residence Life on or before May 1st. First time college applicants
applying after May 1st for student housing are placed on a waiting list. If
residence spaces become available, the Office of Housing and Residence Life
notifies waitlisted students as quickly as possible.
