Center for Design and New Media
Concepts from the design feasibility study conducted by
Ennead Architects (formerly Polshek Partnership)
When the Center for Design and New Media opens up in the heart of campus, replacing the old gymnasium, it will literally create new pathways for collaboration, creativity, and community-building. Where physical barriers now exist between buildings and departments, entryways will appear, enabling people to move more freely between the Tower Building and North, South, and East Halls.
The center will house new studios and equipment, common areas, and exhibit and lecture halls that will be shared by all the design and media departments. This will allow animators to partner with architects, industrial designers with fashion designers, videographers with illustrators, and countless other multi-disciplinary combinations.
In addition to the internal renaissance, the new center will feature a transparent glass portico, two stories tall, that stretches out to Huntington Avenue. This will not only add a luminous and memorable new entrance to campus – right in the middle of the block – it will provide a more natural, fluid way for students, professors, and visitors to move between buildings.
