Summer Studios

A pre-college studio art program for students entering grades 11 and 12

July 23—August 18, 2012

Summer Studios is an intensive four-week program for the young artist who is serious about his or her work. Students from around the country and abroad come together to experience MassArt and the environment of a higher education institution in the visual arts. Students take two required foundation classes and two electives and are able to see the development of their work over the program. In addition, the program offers a number of special events, and students participate in a closing exhibition of their work.

The nature of this program is that of a rigorous art school. Attendance is mandatory in each studio. Students are expected to complete homework assignments and engage in individual and group critiques. Students have the option of living on campus or attending as day students.

Summer Studios is offering the option of taking the program for credit (learn how to apply for credit). Students interested in this option will have to apply by submitting a portfolio. Students who are accepted and successfully complete the program receive three college credits from MassArt, which can be used towards MassArt studio elective credits if the student enrolls at MassArt in the future. Credits may also be accepted at a student's high school at the discretion of the school.

Summer Studios meets Monday through Friday. The morning focuses on foundation skills in two- and three-dimensional work as well as observational skills, and on critical thinking and analysis. In the afternoon, students explore different media and areas through electives of their choice:

  • architecture
  • fashion
  • graphic design
  • painting
  • photography
  • animation
  • screen printing
  • ceramics
  • jewelry
  • mixed media
  • illustration

Electives generally run Monday/Thursday and Tuesday/Friday.

Special Events

  • Sneak preview college day
A one-day, in-depth introduction to the art college admissions process. Morning session reviews of student artwork created in the program are followed by an afternoon session with area art colleges describing their schools' missions. A mini college fair follows.
  • Student exhibition
Family and friends are invited to attend a slideshow and exhibition of selected work produced during Summer Studios. The student exhibition takes place on the final Saturday of the program.
