Furniture Design Certificate

A unique collaboration between the college and North Bennet Street School

North Bennet Street School is one of the country's leading institutions teaching fine craftsmanship in furniture making as well as other discipines. MassArt is one of the country's leading colleges of art and design. MassArt and North Bennet Street School are excited to offer a unique program that capitalizes on the extraordinary and complementary strengths of the two institutions.

Vision, Process, and Craft
The Furniture Design Certificate Program emphasizes design as an iterative process in the creation of studio furniture and the development of each student as an artist/designer and craftsperson. Students who pursue this certificate will have the ability to design and build unique studio furniture, limited production pieces, and prototype furniture and will have a basic understanding of issues, materials and production that would constitute an introduction to working in the area of contract furniture.

A Faculty of Artists and Makers
Faculty is comprised of accomplished woodworkers, designers and craftsmen who are also experienced educators. Faculty draw on their experience and expertise to guide students through projects of increasing complexity, helping students build skills in design and hand and machine woodworking.

Curriculum to Challenge and Inspire
Eight core courses, complemented by two studio electives, are structured to build skills while developing each student's unique vision and artistic identity.

Beginning with a foundation in design process and an overview of the history of furniture, students then engage in a series of studios where they are able to build projects of increasing sophistication. The program culminates in a significant project reflective of the student's capabilities at the time of graduation along with a Professional Practice seminar for students to more easily transition to the work place and understand design industry standards and practices.

The program consists of 10 courses totaling 29 credits, and usually takes 2 and a half years to complete. Students are expected to enroll in 1 or 2 courses per semester (fall and spring). Required courses may be offered in the summer, but summer coursework is optional.

Exceptional facilities at the North Bennet Street School's location in Boston's historic North End and MassArt's Huntinton Avenue campus give students the space and resources to pursue their goals.

Please note that applications to the Furniture Design Certificate program are only accepted for the fall semester, the deadline for applying is April 1st.
