Fashion Design Certificate
MassArt's well-known Fashion Design program offers a fashion design certificate for those who wish to advance their skills or careers in fashion design. Classes are offered on a rotating schedule that allows participants to complete the certificate in two years. Applicants for the program must have earned a high school diploma and demonstrate knowledge and interest in fashion.
The program consists of 10 courses totaling 29 credits, and usually takes 2 years and 1 summer to complete. Students are expected to enroll in 1 or 2 courses per semester (fall and spring). Although summer enrollment is required once, in general summer coursework is optional.
The Certificate consists of six foundation courses in fashion fundamentals:
- Introduction to Creative Design
- Pattern Drafting
- Fashion Illustration
- Fashion & Art
- Couture Design
Two Foundation classes are offered each semester to prepare students for the program's master classes. Each master class focuses on a fashion specialty and is taught by an expert in the field. Classes include costume design, handbag design, trend forecasting, and CAD courses for design (U4ia) and manufacturing (Gerber). Certificate students will develop individual projects and learn from professionals in Haute Couture, Bespoke Tailoring, and Theatre Costume.
Students enrolled in the certificate program receive a number of services. Certificate students are able to pre-register for classes before classes are open for general enrollment. Also, each student is assigned a faculty advisor, who is available through the year and works with the program coordinator to ensure that they are able to assist with all student issues. Certificate students also enjoy small classes; required classes are generally limited to sixteen students, except for the portfolio class.
