Creative Economy

Recognizing that the creative sector is an important economic engine, MassArt is uniting leaders in creative industries from Boston and beyond to create strategies for sustainable growth.

The creative economy, comprising artists, designers, and cultural institutions, is booming in both Boston and Massachusetts. The city has the second largest concentration of designers of any city in North America, and the state boasts the highest number of architects and designers as a percentage of the workforce in the United States.

As a public institution in the heart of a thriving creative economy-and one that offers a full range of art and design programs-MassArt is uniquely positioned to help shape policy related to the growth of this important economic sector.

Through Designing an Industry/Designing the Future, launched in 2007, MassArt is serving as a catalyst to create a strong network among the diverse components of the design cluster. The initiative is also facilitating linkages between this sector and other key industries, as well as raising awareness about the contributions design makes to the statewide economy.

MassArt also hosts international design industry symposia that bring Boston designers, educators, and public policy agencies together with their European counterparts to help foster a robust design industry in Massachusetts.
