College-Community Connections

Dedicated to its public mission and located at the heart of a district rich in cultural and educational resources, Massachusetts College of Art and Design is a force for change in its community.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design is serious about making a difference. It instills these values in its curriculum, with members of the faculty taking the lead to identify projects that go beyond the classroom. Students also are active participants in community service programs, serving as educators in local schools and designers at area hospitals.

Recognizing its premier location among Boston's top academic, cultural, and medical institutions, MassArt also strives to be a good neighbor. The college is a member of academic consortia that seek ways of expanding educational resources available to students, as well as neighborhood associations dedicated to enhancing the economic vitality of the area.

In keeping with its longstanding public mission, MassArt's doors are always open to community members and to young people, in particular. Each year, thousands of students from urban neighborhoods, suburban communities, and small New England towns come to MassArt for a firsthand experience with art and design. Through K-12 classes, exhibition-related education programs, and mentorship, the college helps young people grow into well-rounded, community-minded adults.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has selected 119 colleges and universities, including MassArt, for its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. Among the three categories of classification, MassArt is distinguished for its community outreach and partnerships.
