Rich Streitmatter-Tran, SIM '03
SIMSome artists march for social justice. Vietnam-based Rich Streitmatter-Tran, SIM ’03, and Union of Myanmar artist Chaw Ei Thein used sweet persuasion. They formed 12-foot sculpture September Sweetness from nearly six tons of sugar. The reproduction of a Myanmar Buddhist temple slowly eroded over the three months it was exhibited outdoors in the Singapore Biennale. “It signified the erosion of hope in Myanmar, where a 2007 protest led by monks was violently suppressed to international condemnation,” says Streitmatter-Tran.
